As stated by Sahib Sri Guru Amar Das Ji on Ang 788 in the Raag of Suhi (Suhi Raag is meant to express devotion and the undying love towards Akaal Purkh), “A husband and wife are not called husband and wife if they only sit together, they become husband and wife once they follow the spiritual path together towards Akaal Purkh and become one Jot (light/ soul).”

The blissful union of Anand Karaj created by Maharaj to signify a deep, spiritual connection between 2 souls is one of first step on the path towards becoming One with Akaal Purkh.
Sahib Sri Guru Ram Das Ji beautifully describes the process of the 2 Aatmas (souls/ Jot) immersing with Akaal Purkh in the bani of Laavan on Ang 773. Each Laav is a step on a staircase of the spiritual journey together towards Akaal Purkh, beginning from the first step in married life, Pehli Laav (First Laav).
Pehli Laav (First Laav)
ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਪਹਿਲੜੀ ਲਾਵ ਪਰਵਿਰਤੀ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ॥
ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵੇਦੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਹੁ ਪਾਪ ਤਜਾਇਆ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥
ਧਰਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਆਰਾਧਹੁ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
ਸਹਜ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਹੋਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
ਜਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲਾਵ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਆਰੰਭੁ ਕਾਜੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
Har pehlaree laav parvirtee karam drirraaiaa bal raam jeeo.
Baanee brahma ved dharam drirrho paap tajaaiaa bal raam jeeo.
Dharam drirraho har naam dhiaavho simrat naam drirraaiaa.
Satgur gur pooraa aaraadhho sabh kilvikh paap gavaaiaa.
Sehaj anand hoa vadbhaagee man har har meethaa layea.
Jan kahe Nanak laav pehlee aaranbh kaaj rachaaiaa.
When the couple does matha tek (bow), stands, and takes the first step in their spiritual journey together for the first time in front of Akaal Purkh, Guru Ram Das Maharaj Ji, through Pehli Laav (First Laav), explains that this Laav helps the couple begin their journey by seeking Gurbani and instill Waheguru in their conscious during each task after marriage.
Dooji Laav (Second Laav)
ਹਰਿ ਦੂਜੜੀ ਲਾਵ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭੈ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਭਉ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਦੂਰੇ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮੰਗਲ ਗਾਏ ॥
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੀ ਲਾਵ ਚਲਾਈ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਵਜਾਏ ॥੨॥

Nirbho bhai man hoey houmai mail gavaaiaa bal raam jeeo.
Nirmal bho paaiaa har gun gaa-liaa har vekhai raam hadhoorae.
Har aatam raam pasaariaa suami sarab rehiaa bharpoorae.
Antar baahar har prabh eko mil har jan mangal gaaey.
Jan Nanak doojee laav chalaee anhad sabad vajaaey.
In Dooji Laav (Second Laav), Guru Ram Das Maharaj Ji explains to the couple the importance of renouncing their past augun (bad deeds) by making them realize that Akaal Purkh is deep within their soul and all around them as well. As the couple continues to walk around Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj Ji, they are walking away from their past egos and towards the light of Akal Purkh.
Teeji Laav (Third Laav)
ਹਰਿ ਤੀਜੜੀ ਲਾਵ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ਭਇਆ ਬੈਰਾਗੀਆ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ॥
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਆ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੀ॥
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕਥੀਐ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਤੀਜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਮਨਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
Har teejarree laav man chaao bhaiaa bairaageeaa bal raam jeeo.
Sant janaa har mel har paaiaa vaddbhaageeaa bal raam jeeo.
Nirmal har paaiaa har gun gaaiaa mukh bolee har bani.
Sant janaa vaddbhaagee paaiaa har katheeai akath kahaanee.
Hirdai har har har dhun upjee har japeeai mastak bhaag jeeo.
Jan Nanak bolae teejee laavai har upjai man bairaag jeeo.
After understanding the first 2 steps in blissful wedded life with Akaal Purkh as a center foundation, Guru Ram Das Maharaj Ji, in Teeji Laav (Third Laav), explains the deep longing and love towards Akaal Purkh that grows in the couple’s heart through Sangat (positive influential environment through Saints) and singing of His hymns.
Chauthi Laav (Fourth Laav)
ਹਰਿ ਚਉਥੜੀ ਲਾਵ ਮਨਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਭਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ॥
ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ॥
ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਜੀ ਵਾਧਾਈ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਕਾਜੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ਧਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਿਗਾਸੀ ॥
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਚਉਥੀ ਲਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਵਿਨਾਸੀ ॥੪ ੨॥
Har choutharree laav man sehaj bhaiaa har paaiaa bal raam jeeo.
Gurmukh miliaa subhaae har man tan meethaa laaiaa bal raam jeeo.
Har meethaa laaiaa mere prabh bhaaiaa andin har liv laaee.
Man chindiaa fal paaiaa suami har naam vajee vaadhaaee.
Har prabh thaakur kaaj rachaaiaa dhan hirdhaey naam vigaasee.
Jan Nanak bolae chouthee laavai har paaiaa prabh avinaasee.
When the couple does matha tek (bow), stands, and takes the first step in their spiritual journey together for the fourth and final time in front of Akaal Purkh, Guru Ram Das Maharaj Ji, through Chauthi Laav (Fourth Laav), explains that through spiritual awakening of connection with Jots and reciting of sweet hymns, the mind has become pure. The blissful journey in aiding each other to reach Akal Purkh and become one with Him has begun, and without His light, this union would be incomplete. The jewel of Naam Bani is gifted to the couple through these Laavs and this spiritual path to Akaal Purkh is completed through this fourth and final step.
